Suzi: Why I Listen
I have had a relationship with UCA for almost twenty-two years. It has grown from a casual admiration to deep appreciation and loyalty. I remember the first CD recorded in Israel, the “John Rutter Requiem”, still a favorite of mine. I remember when John T. joined the board and I soon after. I remember when Becky approached our daughter, Sara, about auditioning. What a compliment and honor! Then reality hit. She would have to sing for Barlow! She passed the audition (whew) and joined in for the next ten years. A highlight for John and me was the opportunity to join the group on the 2008 tour of England and France. We had an amazing experience with our oldest daughter, Monica who joined us, along with Sara, Carter and Laura. (It was a family affair…oh yes, Becky too of course. What would UCA do without Becky?) We forged friendships, gathered magical moments, and absorbed the abundance of culture and art wherever we went. Those who attended the concerts in the churches, venues, and the glorious Notre Dame Cathedral were all enriched, as were all the artists. I will never forget the processional after the international mass in Notre Dame. The organ seemed to penetrate every fiber of my being. It was a spiritual thrill. I don’t know how else to describe it! John and I are so excited for the 2014 tour!
I love Gardner Hall. My father spent most of his career in that Hall. What a perfect home for the Utah Chamber Artists. Their exquisite sound brings joy, peace and a sense that all is right with the world. That is how I feel when I come to a concert. The best part of being there is walking by my father’s portrait before every concert. I have a little conversation with him. I tell him I love him…and sometimes I see his pleasant smile widen a bit as we share a past memory.
