Mondsee Abbey, Austria

THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT MONDSEE ABBEY

1. Originally a Benedictine Abbey founded in 748 atop Roman ruins.

2. The basic Gothic structure of the cathedral was “modernized” in the 17th century. The baroque sculptures and altars were made by the famous sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler.

3. The wedding scene in The Sound of Music was filmed here almost 50 years ago! It was a beautiful and tragic scene in equal measure, and it took a long time for the directors to decide to use the abbey.
