THE PROGRAM
Salve Regina – Rebecca Dale
A luminous setting of the ancient Marian prayer, with an exposed soprano line and shimmering, overlapping choral harmonies that seem to float through the space.
Latin Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ, Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve. Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ. Ad te suspiramus, Gementes et flentes In hac lacrimarum valle.
Panta Rhei – Karen P. Thomas
Taking its title from the Greek phrase “everything flows,” this dramatic work for soprano, choir, and strings invites listeners into a musical world of movement and transformation. Everything flows
Heraclitus
Kol han’khalim holkhim el hayam v’hayam eynenu Malay el mikom shehankhalim holkhim sham heym shavim lalakhet.
All rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the rivers flow, there they return again.
Ecclesiastes 1:
Yordey hayam ba’oniyot osey m’lakha b’mayim rabim Heyma ra’u ma’asey Adonai v’nifl’otav bimtzula Vayomer vaya’ameyd ru’akh s’ara vat’romeym galav Ya’alu shamayim yeyrdu t’homot nafsham b’ra’a titmogag Yakhogu v’yanu’u kashikor v’khol khokhmatam titbala Vayitzaku el Adonai batzar lahem umimtzukoteyhem yotzi’eym Yakeym s’ara lidmama vayekheshu galeyhem
Those who go down to the sea in ships; who do work in mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, the wonderful deeds in the deep. God spoke and set up a tempest, and it raised its waves. They went up to the heavens and came down to the depths; their soul melted with trouble. They were frightened and staggered like drunkards; and all their wisdom was destroyed. They cried out to the Lord in their trouble, that he take them out of their straits. God stilled the storm to a calm; the waves (of the sea) were hushed.
Psalm 107
Hineyni oseh khadasha ota titzmakh halo teyda’uha eyf asim bamidbar derekh bishmon n’harot.
Behold, I am making a new thing; now it shall sprout, now you shall know it. I will make a road in the desert, rivers in the wasteland.
Isaiah 43:18-19
nothing remains still

Composer Note ’Panta rhei’ was commissioned by long-time Seattle Pro Musica supporters Sam and Mona Dworkin, who were interested in commissioning a piece for chorus and chamber orchestra in which the singers and instrumentalists would physically intermingle in the performance space, breaking down traditional barriers between them. This idea of blending performers in the space led me to choose texts that expressed the concept of flow and change – beginning with the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who famously wrote ‘no one steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and they are person’. Integral to the concept of “Panta Rhei” is the desire that the barriers we so often impose between singers and instrumentalists should be set aside, recognizing that we are all musicians who make music collectively – whether with our voices, or a piano, violin, bassoon, etc. In the performance, I hope to remove the physical barrier that usually puts instrumentalists in one area and singers in another area, by having all the performers share the same space. This small step becomes a metaphor for the bringing together of any groups of people that have been traditionally separated from each other in one way or another – whether by nationality, economic standing, race, gender… the list is long and historied. As we all move forward in various ways to break down barriers, may we remember we will never step in the same river twice.” Karen P. Thomas
Ēriks Ešenvalds — Passion and Resurrection
A moving oratorio that weaves biblical and liturgical texts into a journey through suffering, compassion, and renewal, bringing ancient sacred traditions into vivid conversation with a contemporary musical voice.
PART I
Ecce nunc in pulver dormiam;
et si mane me quaesieris, non subsistam.
Spare me, O God, for my days are as nothing.
What is man that you so exalt him?
Or why do you subject him to your scrutiny?
How long will you not let me alone nor set me free so that I can swallow my spittle?
Why do you not remove my sin; why do you not take away my iniquity
For now I shall sleep in the earth;and if you seek me in the morning. I shall be not more
after JOB 7:16-21
Woe is me, for my foolish love of debauchery and my cleaving to iniquity have become a deep night unto me in which no light shines. Accept thou the wellsprings of my tears, thou who drawest the waters of the sea up into the clouds. Turn thy countenance upon the sobbing of my heart, thou who hast come from heaven in they inexpressible sacrifice. I shall kiss thy immaculate feet; I shall dry them with the tresses of my hair. In Paradis, Eve seeing them approaching hid herself in fear. Who will examine the multitude of my sins, and they judgements? O my Saviour, my Redeemer of my soul, do not turn away from me: I am thy handmaiden, thou who art infinitely merciful.
from BYZANTINE LITURGY
Thy sins are forgiven thee; thy faith has saved thee, go in peace!
LUKE 7:48, 50
PART II
My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. My father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.
MATTHEW 26: 38, 42
And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. When hey had plaited a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand, they spit upon him: and they have bowed the knee before him. They mocked him, saying Hail, King of the Jews! And after they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
after MATTHEW 27: 28-31
Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
LUKE 23:34
My friend betrayed me by the token of a kiss: Whom I shall kiss, that is he, hold him fast! That was the wicked token which he gave, who by a kiss accomplished murder. Unhappy man, he relinquished the price of blood, and in the end hanged himself.
TENEBRAE RESPONSORY FOR MAUNDY THURSDAY
How great is thy love for mankind, O Lord! Thou bent down and washed Judas’ feet, although he denied and betrayed thee!
from BYZANTINE LITURGY
Amicus meus osculi me tradidit signo: Quem osculatus fuero, Ispe est, tenete ceum! Hoc malum fecit signum, qui per osculum adimplevit homicidium. Inflix praetermisit pretium sanguinis, et in fine laqueo se suspendit
TENEBRAE REPONSORY FOR MAUNDY THURSDAY
PART III
At thy mystic Supper, admit me to thy communion, O Son of God. For I shall not betray the secret to thy enemies, nor give thee the kiss of Judas. But, like the thief, I beseech thee, Lord: remember me when thou comest into they kingdom!
from BYZANTINE LITURGY
Verily I say unto thee: today thou shalt be with me in Paradise!
LUKE 23:43
The grieving Mother stood beside the cross weeping where her Son was hanging. Through her weeping soul, compassionate and grieving, a sword passed. Who is the man who would not weep if seeing the Mother of Christ in such agony?

LUKE 23: 46
PART IV
O dulce lignum, o dulces clavos, o dulcia ferens pondera: quae sola fuisti digna sustinere regem caelorum et Dominum. O sweet wood, sweet nails, bearing sweet burdens: you who alone were worthy to support the king of the heavens and the Lord.
ALLELUIA AT MASS ON THE FINDING OF THE HOLY CROSS
Why seek ye among the dead, as a mortal, the One who abides in everlasting light? Behold the linens of burial, the Lord is risen!
after LUKE 24: 5-6
Woman, why weepest thou? Woman, whom seekest thou? Sir, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou has laid him, and I will take him away.
Mariam.
